BRAVE / PRAXIS: Sicardi Gallery :: Transitional

Sicardi Gallery :: Transitional

5 February 2013, 03:38

I’ve been to a few exhibitions held at Sicardi Gallery and was very impressed with the works there. The last two exhibitions I saw were Carlos Cruz-Diez, known for his kinetic art (who also had an exhibition at MFAH in 2011), and Pedro Tyler who creates portraits of performing artists by scraping, sanding, and burning rulers. Both exhibition left me intrigued as to what the next exhibition would be.

Two weeks ago, Sicardi Gallery had an opening reception for their latest exhibition, Transitional, in which eight Colombian-born artists re-interpret the tradition of art in Latin America through drawings, installation, video and sculpture. Each artist used a different media and are best viewed in person for the details, animation and sounds they may have. I extremely like how Teresa Currea mixed in different levels of detail (and the craft!) in her work as well as the sound that accompanies Diana Menestrey’s video clips. María Isabel Arango’s work also stood out as she took some well known fairy tales and gave them a twist of her own.

Upstairs is another exhibition, Works on Paper, that ends on the 16th of this month. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s a compilation of Latin American artists who explored the field of abstraction since the 1940’s. I like the vibrant use of colors and illusions some of them created.

Transitional will be there until March 16th if you want to stop and take a look. I definitely enjoyed it and can’t wait for Sicardi’s future exhibitions!
