Houston Police Department Museum
13 November 2009, 16:52
The Houston Police Department Museum is an exciting project for our firm and for the City of Houston. It is a relocation of the existing museum from the HPD Academy Building to a more centrally located site in downtown. The intent of moving the museum to 1200 Travis is to give the exhibits greater exposure to the public as well as to have an opportunity to update the display fixtures for a more modern appearance. The 3,050 SF exhibition space will provide display space for their current archives as well as select patrol vehicles, including a retired helicopter suspended from the ceiling.
The glazing surrounding the exterior of the space will be wrapped in a protective film, shielding the delicate, historical items on display while providing a graphic demarcation for the museum’s facade.
Most importantly, the museum will house the department’s Wall of Honor, a dedicated area for displaying the badges of officers who have fallen in the line of duty. The design intends to serve as a monument to the brave men and women of Houston’s law enforcement community and to educate the public about the services and duties that the officers have provided.
