Journeys ::: Palmetto State Park
10 March 2010, 19:44
We recently made a visit to Palmetto State Park near Gonzales, Texas to do some camping and hiking. This park is named for the tropical Dwarf Palmetto plant found in the area. Like many state parks in Texas, one of its key attributes is the protection of unique landscape features and vegetation once found in abundance in this area of DeWitt County. These attributes include preserving the flowing artesian springs and palmetto bogs and swamps. The park is also known for its abundant bird and snake population. While we saw a great deal of bird activity, we were fortunate not to run across any of the snakes. Another of the park’s key interests are the historic stone buildings that were constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps throughout the 1930’s in the National Park style made famous by architects Mary Coulter and Herbert Maier a decade earlier.
