BRAVE / PRAXIS: Journeys ::: Swiss Alp Dance Hall

On a lone stretch of Highway 77 between Schulenburg and La Grange, in an assuming wood and corrugated metal building, is one of Texas’s greatest and still operating dance halls. On a whim, my wife and I loaded up the kids and headed west for an evening of dinner and dancing. Music was provided by a great, new country music singer, Weldon Henson.

At only only an hour and half from Houston, this made for an easy trip out of town. We arrived for dinner around 7, and the band started at 9. After a few hours of fun, the kids started to get a little tired, so by 10pm, we were on the road back to Houston. This is a very easy day trip that could have been made much longer with things to do around Schulenburg and La Grance, but we went primarily to have the kids get to experience the music and dancing in a place that fosters such experiences.

Granted we got there a bit early and left early, but a lot more folks were walking in as we were walking out. With 2 small kids in tow for the evening, it was a good night, and that is one of the distiguishing aspects of the hall. The Swiss Alp Dance Hall is not only historic, but its history is rooted in familial and generational interaction, and that gives it a great distinction over your typical roadside honky tonk. However, I hear that Friday nights the place tends to get a little rowdy, and that is fun too.

If you are ever in the mood for a drive and a night on the wood dance floor, I would highly recommend that you check this place out.
