Bachelor Modern: Mid-Century Style in an American Film
14 January 2011, 13:57
(Start clip at 9:20) Director Otto Preminger’s 1953 film The Moon is Blue is about the 24-hour romance between a playboy architect and a young woman he meets at the Empire State Building. The film takes place mainly in the bachelor architect’s apartment. What I found exciting about William Holden’s bachelor pad is his mid-century style. Films of this era portrayed families living in traditional style, however bachelors possessed freedom from responsibility and their modern living spaces reflected their independence. Holden’s pad had a spiral staircase, Eero Saarinen-designed Womb Chair, Eames “bikini” wire chairs, George Nelson clock among other now valuable and highly desirable items. (the end of the clip shows his apartment).
