Ryan Middle School

Prior to becoming a member of The 1%, BRAVE / ARCHITECTURE did pro bono work for organizations and occasionally on aspects of contracted projects. Since joining the online database of non-profit organizations searching for potential pro bono design work, the firm has been contacted multiple times for project management, programmatic, and design work in the Houston area. These projects have ranged from community building design, landscape design, and facility needs assessments.
Currently, B/A is in the final stages of a gallery and library installation project at HISD’s Ryan Middle School. Contacted by The Dawn Project in November 2008, the firm organized an independent study class of three students from the University of Houston’s Gerald D. Hines School of Architecture to work with the school and community in the development of the spaces. The student’s participated with selected Ryan Middle School students in architecture projects geared toward the conceptual design of the Choir Room’s display panels and the library’s graphic. The panels and pedestals were designed by the students and later detailed by the firm. The library’s installation includes a wall graphic with a photo from inside the now demolished Houston Carnegie library with a copy of E. O. Smith’s original 1908 letter to the Carnegie’s librarian requesting help in the creation of the local library. The RMS library space will also include The Dawn Project’s computer kiosk where the community can view the neighborhood and school’s history as well as enable them to record their own stories. We will update this entry as the project progresses. Its completion date is set for this fall.
