Visit to Peru

14 September 2009, 21:07

After a long time of wishing to visit Peru, last week my dream came true. I went with a friend on a trip to northern Peru. We chose this area due to the abundant number of cultural places to visit (mainly pre-Columbian), ceviche, warmer ocean currents and lots of surf. We flew directly to the city of Trujillo, one of the largest cities in the country. Trujillo is also one of the first Spanish cities in Peru with many colonial buildings. What I am sharing here is my visit to the ruins of Chan Chan.

CHAN CHAN
Located on the north coast of Peru, near Trujillo, is the pre-Columbian city of Chan Chan. Built around 1300 AD and covering 28 Sq Km, Chan Chan is the largest pre-Columbian city in the Americas and the largest adobe city in the world. At the height of the Chimu Empire, it housed an estimated 60,000 inhabitants and contained a vast amount of gold, silver and ceramics. The wealth remained more or less undisturbed after the city was conquered by the Incas, but once the Spaniards hit the stage, the looting began. Within a few decades, little but gold dust remained. Although Chan Chan must have been a dazzling sight at one time, devastating El Niño floods and heavy rainfall have severely eroded the mud walls of the city. Today the most impressive aspect of the site is its sheer size. The perimeter walls once stood over 10m high (approx. 30ft). The pictures belong to a small area that houses the ceremonial courtyards and some administrative areas as well. Some work is being done to preserve these adobe walls from an upcoming “El Niño” this year. The Chimu people’s (750 to 1475 AD) economy was mainly sustained by agriculture and fishing. They adored the moon (which makes a lot of sense – since as fishermen they were very aware of the meteorological conditions and the ocean). The city of Chan Chan is entirely decorated with creatures related to the ocean such as sea gulls, fish, etc. The walls were once colored with natural pigments that were lost with time and rainfall.
